Is it Time for a Split-Level Remodel?

Split-level homes became popular in North America back in the 1950’s with the peak in popularity of this style home happening in the 1970’s. Today, split-level homes are typically more affordable and offer an open concept layout, making the entire house feel more open and connected. The way that split-level homes provide separate distinct living areas on different levels is great for larger families or people who love to entertain.

Due to the age of most split-level homes, they make excellent candidates for remodeling projects. Remodeling a split-level home can give it a boost of modern appeal, making the home more attractive and functional while retaining the original benefits available with this housing style.

Common Split Level Remodeling Ideas

There are so many different remodeling ideas for transforming and modernizing the look of a split-level home.

One of the most common complaints people have about split-levels is that the front entry is too small. A remodeling project can be designed to enlarge the front entry and foyer in order to make it more functional. Enlarging the front entrance will improve its size, appeal and provide more room on the landing.

Older split-level homes typically lack the modern style and curb appeal of newer homes; the traditional outer styling of split-levels homes was relatively unexciting and dull. A remodeling project can be designed to update the exterior styling of the home and maximize curb appeal.

Many split-level homes were built to maximize the openness of the living spaces, but this was often achieved at the expense of the kitchen layout and size. A remodel may be necessary to create a kitchen that is both larger in size and more open concept.

There may be concerns over the amount of natural light that comes into the home. Remodeling projects can be designed to improve the amount of natural light by adding a skylight or more windows into any room in the home. This can also be achieved with a new sunroom addition to the home.

Finding the Right Designers and Builders

The process of choosing the best designers to plan a remodeling project can take a lot of time and it can be a source of frustration for many homeowners. The same is true when it is time to find the right contractor.

Design and build companies have become popular for new custom home builds, as well as any type of renovation project. These companies provide a single point of contact and accountability for a complete home renovation project delivery, including professional design services, construction services and even landscaping services in some instances. These companies will work with clients to take their ideas for a home remodeling project, create the designs and have those designs realized through professional building crews.

The top design and build companies in the GTA are registered with the Ministry of Housing and they are also certified members of RenoMark and Renovantage for added peace of mind.

Plan a split-level remodel that improves the look of your home and the functionality of your living space today.
